Quick reference guide
Nurse tax deductions in Australia: a practical EOFY checklist
Work-related receipts nurses commonly forget to keep.

Quick checklist
- Registration, union, and professional membership fees.
- Work-related education and conferences.
- Uniform laundry and protective items where eligible.
- Travel records for work-to-work trips, not ordinary commuting.
Common categories
Uniform laundry, professional registration, union fees, education, protective items, and travel between work sites may be relevant depending on your situation.
Be careful with ordinary travel between home and work. Keep notes for work-to-work trips separately so your accountant can assess them properly.
Roster life makes records harder
Shift work makes it easy to delay admin. Receipts arrive while you are between shifts, then vanish under everything else.
A dedicated deductions inbox is useful because it gives every receipt one destination, even when your schedule is not neat.
Keep proof
The value is not just the amount. The value is having dated, searchable evidence when tax time lands.
If the receipt needs context, add a note at the time. Future you will not remember why that purchase mattered.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Claiming home-to-hospital commute as work travel. Ordinary commuting is not deductible, even on shift work or on-call.
- Claiming the full cost of conventional clothing because you wear it at work. Only specific protective clothing or distinctive compulsory uniforms typically qualify, with strict rules.
- Forgetting to deduct any allowance the employer paid back to you. Reimbursed amounts can't be claimed.
- Claiming the AHPRA fee twice — once where the hospital paid it, and again personally. Only the portion you paid yourself counts.

Frequently asked questions
Can nurses claim AHPRA registration as a tax deduction?
If you paid the AHPRA registration fee yourself and it relates to your current nursing role, it is generally deductible. If your employer paid or reimbursed it, you can't claim that amount. Keep the receipt either way.
Are scrubs, shoes, or laundry deductible?
Distinctive, employer-mandated uniforms (often with a logo) and protective clothing required for your role can generally be claimed, including the cost of laundering them. Plain T-shirts, plain pants, and ordinary shoes typically aren't deductible even if you only wear them at work. Check the ATO uniform rules carefully.
Can I claim CPD courses, conferences, or short courses?
Self-education that maintains or improves the skills required in your current nursing role is generally deductible. Courses that take you into a new field or future career change usually aren't. Keep the receipt, agenda, and a short note linking it to your current role.
Can I claim the cost of travelling between hospitals or wards?
Travel directly between two different work locations on the same day can sometimes be claimable using a logbook or kilometre method. Travel from home to your regular workplace is not. Keep contemporaneous trip notes if you do drive between sites.
What about meal allowances, overtime meals, or shift snacks?
Overtime meal allowances may interact with deductions if you actually spent the money — but the rules are specific and depend on whether the allowance was disclosed correctly on your PAYG. A registered tax agent should review meal-allowance scenarios before lodging.
